Getting to know Eternium, 'Kryptonite' for Black Adam
Getting to know Eternium, 'Kryptonite' for Black Adam |
Black Adam is the latest DC Extended Universe film that introduces actor Dwayne Johnson as its main star. After going through various drama schedule delays, finally the film by Jaume Collet-Serra was able to air earlier in Indonesia since October 19 yesterday. Based on what is seen in the film, it is quite clear that Black Adam is a figure whose strength is extraordinary.
Even so, it turns out that behind all his strengths, Black Adam also has a weakness that is quite fatal. Namely Eternium, which can make Black Adam fall instantly. As seen in his appearance at the beginning of the film, when he just got out of the eternal prison that had imprisoned him for 5,000 years. What exactly is Eternium and how dangerous is it for Black Adam? Let's just look at the following discussion!
Origin Eternium at DC Comics
Before discussing what Eternium is in the Black Adam film, let's first dive into its brief history in DC Comics. Maybe not many know that Eternium itself is actually nothing new in the DC Universe. As an element related to Black Adam, Eternium first appeared in Legion of Super-Heroes Vol. 4 #110 (1998). Originally Eternium was not a common element, like kryptonite or Nth Metal. In fact Eternium is a fragment of the Rock of Eternity, the headquarters of the ancient wizard Shazam made of a combination of hell and heaven stones.
The appearance of Eternium itself stems from the wishes of the supervillain Dr. Savant who wants to erase witchcraft from the universe. Where he actually tries to realize the crazy idea by destroying the Rock of Eternity. From here the Rock of Eternity, which was originally a massive rock structure, broke into pieces into pieces of Eternium. Although Dr. Savant failed to achieve his goal, but since then many villains have started to use this stone to defeat the superhumans who got their powers in the Rock of Eternity, such as Black Adam and Shazam.

Eternium, Magic Element in DCEU
Broadly speaking, the function of Eternium in the DCEU itself is more or less the same as in the comics. The difference is, Eternium in this live action universe is not a fragment of Rock of Eternity. But rather a kind of rare element that can only be found in the region of origin of Black Adam, namely Kahndaq. It had been revealed from the start that Eternium was a magical element that could function as a magic catalyst. This is evident from King Anh-Kot's plan to make Sabbac's crown from Eternium. So he enslaved the people of Kahndaq to seek Eternium in the bowels of the Earth.
In the future, Eternium in the DCEU can even be used as a fuel or explosive that is superior to ordinary elements. The flying motorbikes seen in the Black Adam film are seen using Eternium as fuel, so the motorbikes belonging to Intergang seem to be able to go very fast. Then at the beginning of the film when Black Adam just got out of his eternal prison, one of the Intergang troops had time to use an Eternium rocket to attack Black Adam. As a result, Black Adam was seen to have bounced and even suffered a serious wound in his stomach.
Eternium Impact On Black Adam
From what is seen in the film, it is actually quite clear that Eternium is a magical element that can weaken Black Adam. Even so, not a few still don't understand, how far is the impact of this one element on Black Adam? In short, the effect of Eternium itself is similar to that of Kryptonite to Superman. If standing near Eternium, then the power of Black Adam or Shazam can be weakened. And if they are directly hit by the Eternium shards, then they can suffer very serious injuries, maybe even killing Black Adam or Shazam.
As seen in the film, when the Eternium rocket explodes, the impact of the wound caused by the explosion can knock Black Adam unconscious. He initially looked dazed and flew into the sky, but instantly Black Adam fell down as if he had lost his strength. Fortunately, at that time there were Adrianna and her brother who immediately took her to their home. For the wound from Eternium itself, it seems that Black Adam can't immediately heal it. Maybe Black Adam needs time to heal the wound, just like human wounds in general.
That's the discussion about Eternium. Now, with Sabbac and Intergang lost, it seems that only a handful of people know about Black Adam's weakness. Even so, there is one thing that makes Eternium seem far more dangerous than Kryptonite, namely its existence on Earth. That way there will be many villains who have the potential to use it to defeat Black Adam in the future. So, we'll see what Black Adam's next attempt at hiding his weakness will be.
THANK YOU.
