House of the Dragon : What Happened to Vhagar ???
House of the Dragon : What Happened to Vhagar ??? |
The final episode of the first season of the House of the Dragon series has finally been released. In the episode titled The Black Queen, we are shown when Rhaenyra (Emma D'Arcy) sends her two sons to form an alliance with other kingdoms, namely Stark and Baratheon. Rhaenyra sends Jacaerys (Harry Collect) to Winterfell to get support from the north, while Lucerys is sent by her mother to meet Lord Borros Baratheon. But a terrible event happened to Lucerys. After the terrible incident that happened to her, the question is what will happen to Lucerys?
When Lucerys arrived at Strom's End, the atmosphere turned very gloomy. The image of Vhagar, the largest dragon in the world, is seen as Lucerys tries to enter the palace to convey her mother's message to Borros Baratheon. Previously, Rhaenyra had warned her sons against violence. Even Rhaenyra promised Lucerys saying that Lord Borros would welcome Lucerys well.
Vhagar Kills Lucerys
But in reality, everything that Rhaenyra promised was not proven. In Storm's End, Lucerys meets Aemond, who apparently offers to be engaged to one of Borros Baratheon's daughters. Now that Lucerys is engaged to her cousin, Rhaena Targaryen (Phoebe Campbell), she can't accept Borros' offer to marry one of her children. Worse, Lord Borros was displeased with Rhaenyra's message and asked Lucerys to leave.
Vhagar Kills Lucerys |
When Lucerys was about to leave, Daemond then came to challenge Lucerys. Yep, Aemond wants revenge for what happened to his eyes. Long story short, Lucerys tried to escape from the place along with Arrax. But Aemond didn't stay still, and he chased after Lucerys riding his giant dragon, Vhagar. Towards the end, unexpectedly, Vhagar brutally attacks Arrax, which ends up tearing Arrax's body to pieces. That's where we can conclude that Aemond and Vhagar managed to kill Lucerys and Arrax.
Actually there is a slight difference in the story between the series and the novel Fire & Blood which became the inspiration for the story of House of the Dragon. In the novel, when Aemond boards the Vhagar and chases after Lucerys, Arrax continues to struggle to stay airborne. Arrax was younger and faster, and he could actually beat Vhagar. However, a huge storm blocked it and Vhagar was five times bigger than Arrax.
Well according to Archmaester Gyldayn, the fight between Arrax and Vhagar was brief, and over Shipbreaker Bay, Arrax and Vhagar then collided in mid-air, which ultimately made Arrax and Lucerys fall and kill him. Three days later, Arrax's head and neck were found under the cliffs of Storm's End, and the body of Prince Lucerys was found not far away.
Why Vhagar Rejects Aemond's Order?
While in the sky, there was a clear mismatch between Arrax and Vhagar. When Aemond chased Lucerys, actually Aemond didn't want to kill Lucerys. Aemond just wanted to scare Lucerys and take her eyes. Aemond even ordered Vhagar to obey him, and not attack Lucerys. But strangely, Vhagar disobeyed Aemond. And again, Arrax also disobeyed Lucerys' orders. In fact, geeks, the owner and the dragon usually have a very strong bond, not just like humans and their pets. There should be a strong magical bond between the owner and the dragon, so that the dragon will obey the owner's orders. So why did Arrax and Vhagar refuse the master's orders?
Why Vhagar Rejects Aemond's Order? |
Actually there is no definite answer to this. To Arrax, it seemed like he sensed the fear of his owner, and as a dragon, he decided to fight rather than run. Even against Vhagar who incidentally is a much stronger enemy than him. As for Vhagar, it is possible that he refused orders because Aemond is still relatively new as the owner, which is around 6 years. Besides that,,
Previously, Vhagar was owned by several different characters such as Visenya, Baelon Targaryen (Daemon and Viserys' father), and later by Laena (Nanna Blondell). For a dragon that has been around for a long time, it's likely that he's also suffering from dragon dementia. Yep, although dragons have a fairly strong bond with their owners, they are still wild animals. So it made perfect sense that Vhagar and Arrax would fight back even if it was against their owner's orders.
This is further strengthened by Daemon which states that there are actually many cases of dragons killing other dragons. In the novel, the civil war between the Targaryen does indeed lead to many battles, including battles between dragons. Most of the dragons were also killed during the war, where they killed each other between one dragon and another.
So Trigger War?
With Lucerys killed by Aemond, this would be the trigger for a great war. When Daemon (Matt Smith) returns to Dragonstone to deliver the news of Lucerys' death to Rhaenyra, it seems that Rhaenyra is devastated by the incident. Rhaenyra would think that this was intentional and she would take out her entire army and dragons to attack King's Landing. In the novel Fire & Blood, Maester Gyldayne writes that with the death of Lucerys, "The crow war and the marriage covenant ended, and the fire and blood war began in earnest."
So Trigger War? |
After this, Aemond will be considered by many as the murderer of his family, because Lucerys is actually Aemond's nephew. But maybe later in the series, Lucerys' death will be considered an accident. As we know that when Vhagar attacked Arrax and Lucerys, this was not what Aemond planned.
In the novel Fire & Blood, there are two different camps that arise over the incident. There are camps who think that Aemond killed Lucerys on his own accord, while other camps say that not only did Aemond do that (killed Lucerys), but Aemond is also considered to have carved his eye and handed it over to one of Lord Borros' daughters who called him weak.
That's the explanation of what Vhagar did in the series House of the Dragon episode 10. This incident, which Aemond did not expect, would trigger an even bigger war in the second season. Rhaenyra will likely muster her entire army and dragons to start the attack. So what happened next? Let's just wait, geeks, the continuation of the story.
THANK YOU.
