Various Canceled Superman Movies! From Nicholas Cage Superman until Superman Return 2 |
Superman is a hero from the DC Universe who has extraordinary powers. He made his debut in Action Comics #1 in 1938. Since then the name Superman has become increasingly popular and has appeared in other comics. Besides comics, Superman has also appeared in several films. There have been more than 5 Superman live action films ever made. Perhaps among Superman films, Man of Steel is the most widely known. But long before Man of Steel was released, it turned out that several Superman films were canceled. What are those films? Check out the following!
Superman Lives
Warner Bros. was originally going to make a Superman Lives movie. Development of the film has already begun, with Kevin Smith writing the script. When Smith gave the script to Warner Bros., they were quite pleased with the outcome. Finally, Warner Bros. appointed director Tim Burton who previously worked on the successful Batman film. Nicholas Cage was also appointed to play Superman aka Clark Kent. Well besides Cage, there are several actors involved in the film such as Chris Rock, Christopher Walken, and Kevin Spacey. However, due to a dispute between Warner Bros. and Tim Burton regarding the rising production costs, Burton and Cage finally left this project and made the film cancelled.
Superman Returns 2
In 2006, Warner Bros. made a film called Superman Returns directed by Bryan Singer. In the film, Brandon Routh was chosen to star in the film (as Superman). Routh competed acting with several other actors such as Kevin Spacey, and Kate Bosworth. But the film was not as successful as expected as it only grossed 394 million dollars, with production costs exceeding 204 million dollars. The film also received a lot of criticism, because it was considered not to show many action scenes. But even so, Warner Bros. plans to make a sequel. However, after various problems faced, such as the expiration of the contracts of Brandon Routh and Bryan Singer who were busy with other films. In the end, Superman Returns 2 was discontinued.

Batman vs Superman 2002
In 2016, we saw the epic battle between Batman and Superman in the Batman v Superman Dawn of Justice film. But long before that film, Warner Bros. came close to making a film in 2002 that saw Batman and Superman fight. At that time, Warner Bros. had recruited J.J. Abrams to work on the script. They also appointed McG to direct the film. However, because McG had to make a sequel to Charlie's Angels, he also withdrew from this project. But after the events of 9/11 in America, Warner Bros. chose to make another film that was more in line with their plans, thus canceling the Batman vs Superman movie completely.
Superman: Flyby
Superman: Flyby is a follow-up project after the cancellation of Batman vs Superman. J.J. Abrams is still appointed to write the script for the film. This film will be the death of Superman. But Superman is resurrected after he meets his father in the heavens of Krypton. Warner Bros. chose Brett Ratner to direct Superman: Flyby. But they haven't decided on the exact Superman cast yet. At that time, there were several actors who were candidates for the role of Superman in Superman: Flyby, such as Ashton Kutcher, Brendan Fraser, and Josh Harnett. However, after Ratner had difficulty finding the right Superman role, and a dispute with Jon Peters, Ratner finally withdrew from the project. Warner Bros. also immediately canceled this film.
Superman Reborn
In the 1990s, Warner Bros. had planned to make a Superman movie, which adapted the comic story The Death of Superman. The film tells about the death and resurrection of Superman. Warner Bros also hired Jothan Lemkin to write the script for the film, and titled it Superman Reborn. Initially, Warner Bros. believed that the film would be a success. But they realized there are similarities in the storyline with the Batman Forever film. After that, Warner Bros. changed their minds, and expressed their disapproval of the project, o thought the story was too much. After experiencing several changes of writers, they finally canceled the film.
Those are the geeks of some canceled Superman movies. Some projects are still in the early development stage. But there are some projects that are close to entering production, such as the Superman Lives film. Among the films, which ones do you already know?
THANK YOU.
