The reason from Eiichiro Oda why One Piece characters are weird! |
One Piece is one of the most popular manga and anime worldwide that was born from the genius figure Eiichiro Oda, or who is more familiarly called by his fans as Oda sensei. One of the characteristics that makes One Piece so interesting is the physical design of its strange and different characters. As time goes by, this uniqueness is even more expressive, so that not a few are curious about Oda sensei's reason for doing it all. In this article, we will explore some of the compelling reasons behind the uniqueness and physical variety of characters in the world of One Piece.
Oda Sensei's Art Style and Creativity
The first and indisputable reason why One Piece characters have strange and varied physiques is because all of them are influenced by Oda sensei's art style. Oda has applied this since he first released One Piece manga volume 1 around twenty-six years ago in July 1997. Of course, having an art style that is unique and different from other manga is a must for a manga artist. Especially Oda and the One Piece manga which are under the auspices of Shueisha, a Japanese publishing company that has been releasing Jump magazine for a long time.
If you have ever read or seen the Bakuman anime which tells of the efforts of two young people to become a popular mangaka duo, you probably know how strict the rules and selection are set by Japanese comic publishing companies, aka manga. Where an editor will directly supervise newly debuted mangaka and make sure they have a unique and interesting story and art style. Now in Oda's case, at the time of his debut he seemed to have exceeded Shueisha's expectations where One Piece's story felt promising with an art style that was second to none.
He even continued to develop Oda's art style until it finally became what it is today, with several adaptations that still refer to the original material, such as the anime and video game One Piece. Because as we know, initially the physical size of Luffy and other One Piece characters in East Blue might not be too different and strange. But everything started to change when Arlong and his crew of pirates who were a nation of Fish-Men appeared with a height of more than 2.5 meters, then even bigger when the Giants were introduced with an average height of more than 12 meters.

National Variations in the One Piece World
As mentioned above, the reasons for Oda's art style and creativity are further strengthened by the fact that in the world of One Piece there are many humanoid nations with different physiques. All of that was slowly revealed after Luffy and the Straw Hat crew began to sail the Grand Line. Apart from the Giants who come from the island of Elbaf, there is also the nation of Tony People aka Dwarf who was seen in Green Bit, Dressrosa, where their average height is only a few centimeters. All these height benchmarks are based on an ordinary human who is about 1.7 meters tall.
The Fish-Men that lived in the sea even had a neighboring nation called Merfolk, where they were about 2 meters tall with fish-like tails. Especially for Princess Shirahoshi and her father King Neptune of Merfolk, they were even around 12 meters tall. It is this national variation that creates more characters with strange and diverse physiques in the world of One Piece because their ancestors entered into mixed marriages, which their descendants may not realize. This physical oddity is evident from characters such as Gecko Moria, Fukurou, and also Whitebeard's son Edward Weevil.
Age and Strength Benchmarks
If we look at the Straw Hat Pirates, we might already know that all the humans in it are roughly the same height as Luffy. Except for Franky who is a cyborg, Brook who is taller because maybe his immortality keeps him growing, and Jinbei who is actually a Fish-Men. Now if humans have more or less the same height, why are there other humans who have weirder physiques and are even bigger than Luffy and friends? For example Big Mom and Kaidou are over 7 meters tall even though they are not giants.
The most logical answer why the human race is physically weird and varied is because sometimes One Piece wants to describe the difference in age and strength of each character. For example, Big Mom aka Charlotte Linlin, who is about 8.8 meters tall, when she fought in Raid Onigashima, she was 63 years old. On the other hand, Kaidou, who is very muscular and has a height of 7.1 meters, is 59 years old. Besides that, they are both Yonko (read: ex) who have Devil Fruit powers. So by making them bigger, the characters can look more intimidating.
That's all the discussion about the strange and various physical reasons for One Piece characters. If it weren't for Oda sensei's art style, maybe One Piece characters would look more proportional, where it would feel very mainstream. Then because of the many humanoid nations that exist, as well as other factors such as age and strength, the result is that One Piece is a world that is very rich and seems to have no end. What do you think, Geeks?
THANK YOU.
