The Infinity Gauntlet (1991)

In the history of the Marvel Universe, The Infinity Gauntlet is the event that marked one of the biggest defeats ever experienced by Iron Man and the Avengers. It all started with the ambition of the Mad Titan who wanted to use the Infinity Stone to wipe out half of life in the universe. After Thanos achieved his goal, he created a female version of himself named Teraxxia. It was at this point that many superheroes who tried to restore the situation were shown to have been tragically killed by Teraxxia, one of which was Iron Man who had tried to stop him, but ended with Teraxxia pulling out his head.

World Most Wanted (2009)

From the 1990s we jump to the 2000s, where Marvel Comics is yet another story of one of the most tragic defeats in Iron Man's life. The post-Secret Invasion story begins with the villain Norman Osborn, aka the Green Goblin, who becomes a world hero after killing the Skrull Queen. Because he doubted Norman, Iron Man eventually became the world's number one enemy and fugitive. Long story short, when Norman and Iron Man finally fought, knowing that he would lose to Iron Man, he erased all data and even his own memory so that it wouldn't fall into Norman's hands. Sadly, he also forgot how to breathe and eventually died.

The New Iron Age (2011)

Few people know that Marvel Comics has told the story of the future of Iron Man which is considered very tragic. In this short story, Iron Man suffered a major defeat in his life because the villain Mandarin managed to master the arc reactor technology and use it to conquer the world. What's worse, instead of killing him outright, the Mandarin chose to torture Iron Man for decades, kill Pepper Potts, and turn their son Howard Stark III into an evil cyborg. At the end of the story Iron Man did manage to kill the sleeping Mandarin, but he still died because his body was no longer able to survive.

Time Runs Out (2015)

Another comic that marked one of Iron Man's most tragic defeats in the Marvel Universe, namely the events of Time Runs Out. Taking place in the Ultimate Universe, Tony, who becomes Superior Iron Man, tries to convince other superheroes to save their universe from a multiverse disaster called Incursion. In the process Captain America, who is in his 90s, finally knows that Iron Man is doing it all for his own sake. Blinded by rage, Cap instantly beat Iron Man to death. Meanwhile, Cap and the other superheroes were rescued by Emperor Doom, who had previously created Battleworld for the remnants of the multiverse.

Civil War II (2016)

While not as popular as the first Civil War, the events of the comic Civil War II have been one of Iron Man's greatest defeats that led to his death. It all started with the appearance of Inhuman Ulysses who could see the future, where Captain Marvel felt that this ability could prevent problems before they happened. Because Iron Man was against the idea, a war between the two superhero camps finally broke out. In the process War Machine is told to die and a number of other superheroes are arrested. This made Iron Man angry and he was forced to fight Captain Marvel. But Captain Marvel, who has cosmic powers, manages to kill him.

Infinity Wars (2018)

Apart from the Marvel Universe, Iron Man has also experienced a tragic defeat in the MCU. Precisely in the movie Avengers: Infinity Wars, when he, Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, and the Guardians team faced Thanos on Titan. Even though Iron Man was the only superhero who managed to make Thanos' face bleed, in the end the Mad Titan could beat them all. After stabbing Iron Man and obtaining the Time Stone, Thanos finally made his way to Earth and managed to snap his fingers. It was at this point that an already powerless Iron Man saw Spider-Man and Doctor Strange turn to dust. These pre-Endgame events have left Iron Man's soul reeling for years.

What If… Killmonger Rescued Tony Stark? (2021)

Last but not least, Iron Man's other tragic defeat has also been told in the animated series What If...? episode of Killmonger Rescued Tony Stark. In this episode, the kidnapping in Afghanistan never takes place, as Killmonger intervened before Tony was injured. Tony was never Iron Man and formed a close friendship with Killmonger. Unfortunately, Killmonger only uses Tony to develop his own technology so he can attack Wakanda. In the end Killmonger kills Tony's best friend, James Rhodes. Tony, knowing the truth, tries to kill Killmonger, but he is stabbed to death with a vibranium spear.

Those are the seven most tragic defeats in Iron Man history. All these defeats not only show his physical vulnerabilities and weaknesses, but also reveal the emotional and moral side of the superhero who is usually very confident because he always finds a way to win. Iron Man is a very clear example that even the most powerful and intelligent superhero can suffer heartbreaking defeat. The good news is that most of these defeats made Iron Man learn from his mistakes and finally be able to rise again as a better superhero than before.
