5 DC Comics Characters Inspired From Real People!
5 DC Comics Characters Inspired From Real People! |
DC is one of the world's pioneers of superhero comics, which is now almost 90 years old. Founded in 1934, so far DC Comics has introduced more than 10,000 interesting characters in its universe, from superheroes like Superman to supervillains like Darkseid. But you know, it turns out that from the tens of thousands of DC characters, five of them were inspired by real characters who were quite popular at that time. This is even conveyed directly by the creators of the characters. Who are the characters in question? Check out the list below, geeks!
1. Lucifer Morningstar = David Bowie
Maybe not many new fans know who Lucifer Morningstar is. In fact, he is the demon lord and ruler of hell created by Neil Gaiman and Sam Kieth who debuted in the comic The Sandman (1989). Since then this neutral character has appeared in many other DC stories, whether it's as a demonic villain, or as a god who saves the world.

From the start, Gaiman himself asked the illustrators of The Sandman to draw Lucifer's appearance as closely as possible to British singer and actor David Bowie. At that point Gaiman said, “You have to draw David Bowie. Find him or I will bring him to you. Because if it's not him, you guys have to keep repeating it until you really look like [David Bowie].'
2. Constantine = Sting
Another well-known singer who became a source of inspiration for the DC character is Sting, the vocalist of the band The Police which was popular in the 70s and 80s. Sting is the character who inspired illustrator Stephen Bissette to draw the character John Constantine. Constantine and Sting's resemblance can be seen from the body shape and haircut which are both blonde and spike style.

It all started with Bissette's fad that included her character designs in the Saga of the Swamp Thing comic. Writer Alan Moore went on to say that his character would be seen more often. In the DC Universe itself, Constantine is a wily wizard who works as an occult detective. He is a co-founder of the superhero team Justice League Dark, alongside Zatanna and others.

3. Shazam = Fred MacMurray
Shazam = Fred MacMurray |
Who doesn't know Shazam? This DC character who debuted in 1940 was originally better known as Captain Marvel. As we know, Shazam's own uniqueness lies in his ability to turn into a superhuman after saying the magic word 'Shazam'. According to DC illustrator Jim Steranko, at the time its creators Bill Parker and C.C. Beck chose actor Fred MacMurray as the model for Captain Marvel aka Shazam. From the haircut, to the jawline and chin of Shazam, it looks a lot like MacMurray.
4. Harley Quinn = Arlenn Sorkin
Harley Quinn = Arlenn Sorkin |
Harley Quinn is a fictional character whose popularity is currently on the rise after actress Margot Robbie played her live action version in the DC Universe. In fact, Harley's own initial design was inspired by a real character named Arlenn Sorkin. For those who don't know, before entering DC Comics, Harley actually debuted as the Joker's lover in Batman: The Animated Series (1992) created by Paul Dini and Bruce Timm. Sorkin once said that his best friend Paul Dini made himself a model for the character Harley, after he appeared as a clown on the TV show Days of Our Lives.
5. Darkseid = Hitler
Darkseid = Hitler |
Finally, what many may not know, the next DC character inspired by real characters is the cosmic supervillain Darkseid. He is the New God as well as the tyrant ruler of the planet Apokolips who often travels around the galaxy to conquer and even destroy other planets. According to DC writer Mark Evanier, its creator is none other than Jack Kirby, deliberately making Darseid's characteristics resemble those of the tyrannical leader who almost conquered Earth, namely Adolf Hitler. In 1990, Kirby himself had said that Hitler was like a god, as well as Darkseid.
Those are five DC characters who apparently took design inspiration and also characters from popular figures in the real world. The actors and singers concerned also seem to have known that they were being modeled for comic characters. For example Sting who until recently was quite proud that Constantine was based on his character. Likewise Sorkin who often gets unique birthday greetings from Harley Quinn fans. What do you think, geeks, do these characters really resemble the source of their inspiration?
THANK YOU.
