Get to know Chaac, the God of Talocan in the MCU!

Get to know Chaac, the God of Talocan in the MCU! Black Panther Wakanda Forever is the latest MCU film that tells the story of the conflict between Wakanda and the underwater nation of Talocan aka Atlantis. Although initially the trailer and various promotions of the film depicted Namor as a god to the Talocanil, it turns out that there is a real god who gives power to the Talocans, he is Chaac. Unfortunately his appearance in Wakanda Forever is quite implicit, so not a few fans are curious about his character. For this reason, let's discuss further who the real God Chaac in the MCU is and what his greatness is like!

Appears as a Helper for the Mayans

As a reminder, the name Chaac itself first appears in the Black Panther film Wakanda Forever when Namor (Tenoch Huerta) tells Shuri (Letitia Wright) about the origin of Talocan. Dating back to the 16th century, Namor tells that his parents were originally only humans, they were part of an exiled group from the Mayans. In his escape, one by one the members of their group died, including Namor's father who left his wife who was pregnant with Namor. It was at this point that their shaman asked Lord Chaac for answers so that they would no longer have to run.

In Mayan mythology, Chaac himself is a rain god who is said to often use his lightning ax to bring rain. Long story short, Chaac then inspired the shaman to eat the blue sap plant. At first Namor's mother refused, but when the shaman promised to make Namor their new king, she finally agreed to eat the potion with the others. At first glance they looked sick and dead, but moments later Namor's mother and the others rose again as new figures who could only breathe by extracting oxygen in the water.

At first glance, the story of Chaac and the Talocan ancestors in the MCU may seem ordinary. In fact, the story actually takes references from the beliefs of the Mesoamerican tribes, including the Maya and Aztecs. In addition to existing in Mayan mythology, it turns out that Chaac himself is an Aztec god named Tlaloc. According to belief, Tlaloc is the rain god who prepared the Tlalocan heaven for anyone who died by drowning. This is where the title of Talocan in the MCU emerged, an underwater kingdom as well as a paradise for Namor and Talocanil who had decided to sink into the sea.

God Chaac Resilience in Marvel Comics

What's even more interesting is that apart from coming from Mesoamerican mythology and appearing in the MCU, it turns out that Dewa Chaac also exists in Marvel Comics. He is a Mayan god first described in Thor & Hercules: Encyclopaedia Mythologica #1 (2009). Chaac himself is famous as the god of thunder and rain, as well as the god of agriculture. Just like other Mayan gods, Chaac also has super physical strength, immortality, immunity to disease, and can also heal himself. His main superpower is manipulating and controlling elements, including wind, rain, lightning, and even storms.

In appearance (far left in the picture), Chaac is often seen wearing typical Mayan armor, complete with a shield and lightning ax in his hand. The story in Marvel itself is fairly minimal. Where Chaac is only mentioned as one of the gods born from the Heart of Heaven created by Skyfather Hunab Ku (center in the picture). And he is the rival of the God of Death named Ah Puch (far right in the picture), who had released Demogorge the God-Eater in the comic Thor Annual #10 (1982). Although the story is minimal, it is quite clear that Chaac is a formidable god in the Marvel Universe.

The Future of God Chaac in the MCU

With a very short and implicit appearance, it looks like it will be interesting if one day God Chaac can reappear in the MCU. For example, in stories involving many gods, such as the film Thor: Love & Thunder, which had presented many celestial beings in Omnipotence City. Or it could be that Chaac appears in the next Namor story, maybe in the Namor solo film that fans really hope for. As a god who has healing abilities, Chaac could have appeared to treat Namor's wings that Shuri had removed in the final battle of Wakanda Forever.

Another possibility, it could be that without our knowledge, actually Chaac and Namor have been communicating frequently in the MCU universe. Because actually Namor himself is a Mayan god named Kukulkan aka the Winged Snake God. If true, it is not impossible that we will see the appearance of God Chaac more clearly in the future of the MCU. Where he appears physically like a god who has also appeared in other MCU films, such as Thor, Odin, Zeus, Khonshu, and so on.

That's the discussion about the figure of God Chaac who appeared as a giver of strength to the Talocan nation aka Atlantis in the Black Panther film Wakanda Forever and the MCU as a whole. Namor and Talocan themselves will definitely return in the future of the MCU, because now they have become a new nation that enlivens the universe like Wakanda. Let's just look forward to the next Namor story and hopefully when the time comes, Lord Chaac will also get a chance to reappear, okay?

THANK YOU.
